What is a Husqvarna Viking Sewing Machine?

Husqvarna Viking is a prestigious brand known for producing high-quality sewing machines that cater to the needs of both beginners and professional sewers. Originating from Sweden, these sewing machines are celebrated for their durability, innovation, and advanced technology.

Husqvarna Viking machines offer a wide range of capabilities, including basic sewing, intricate embroidery work, and quilting. With user-friendly interfaces, these machines combine traditional sewing craftsmanship with modern digital technology, making it easier for sewers to produce precise, professional-grade work.

In this article, we’ll discuss computerised machines in general, but it’s important to know that there are differences between machines, so not all features are available on all machines.

Getting Started with Your Husqvarna Viking Sewing Machine

Before diving into the specifics, it’s important to familiarise yourself with the basic setup of your Husqvarna Viking sewing machine. This involves understanding its parts, how to set it up, and the initial steps to get started with sewing.

Unpacking and Setting Up

When you first unbox your Husqvarna Viking sewing machine, take the time to identify all the accessories and read through the manual. Setting up correctly from the start can save you time and prevent issues later on. This is also a good time to familiarise yourself with any accessories that have been provided to make your sewing experience seamless.

Using the Manual

Your sewing machine’s manual is a treasure trove of information. It will guide you on how to properly thread the machine, select stitches, change the needle, and maintain the machine. All the machines we offer come with a printed manual, but you can also download a digital version to have it on whatever device you use, from your iPad to your smartphone. You can search through this digital version, making it easier to find what you’re looking for.

Essential Skills for Operating Your Machine

To help you get started, learning about some of the foundational skills you’ll use when operating your machine is incredibly helpful. This will act as a bedrock for you to develop and further enhance your sewing skills when using a Husqvarna Viking sewing machine. One great way to learn is by using tutorial videos, which can guide you through each skill in a simple, step-by-step process. At Coles Sewing Centre, we offer a great resource for just that on our YouTube page, which you can find here. These tutorials are perfect for beginners and also serve as a refresher for more seasoned users.

Threading Your Sewing Machine

Threading is one of the first and most essential skills to master. Incorrect threading can cause a variety of issues, such as skipped stitches, tension problems, and threads breaking. Even experienced sewers can make mistakes, so it’s worth double-checking that you’re doing this correctly.

First, raise your presser foot to open the thread path, then turn the hand wheel until the take-up lever (the silver lever that protrudes slightly from the from of the machine) is at the top. Thread through, following the directions in your manual, and finish with a flossing action to ensure that the thread sits correctly in the threading path. Finally, tuck the thread behind the hook on the needle clamp and thread your needle.

We offer a clear tutorial on threading your machine that guides you through the process in a simple, step-by-step fashion. Watch our “Threading your sewing machine" video to learn the correct way to thread your Husqvarna Viking and ensure that it runs smoothly.

How to Wind Bobbins

Winding your bobbins correctly is another important aspect of getting your sewing machine set up successfully. If you don’t properly wind your bobbins, you run the risk of tangles or problems with tension when forming a stitch. Be sure to wind your bobbin clockwise and insert it so the thread forms a P shape; don’t forget to pass your bobbin thread through the tension spring of your bobbin case. Take a look at this video for step-by-step instructions on winding a bobbin.

We have another video on inserting your bobbin here.

Advanced Features and Maintenance

Once you have mastered the basics, you can start exploring more advanced features of your Husqvarna Viking sewing machine. The Husqvarna Viking brand is renowned for innovation, precision components and state-of-the-art functionality. Different models of sewing machines will provide different features, so learning about the specifics of your model is really important. Not only will this help you get the most out of your machine, but it will also help guide any maintenance required, which is another important part of getting all you can from the Husqvarna name.

Changing the Thread Cutter Knife

We recommend that you have your machine serviced regularly every 6-12 months, you can find more information on servicing or, get in touch with us to book an appointment, on our website. However, there are a number of tasks that you can regularly do yourself to keep your sewing machine in top condition, which we have explored in depth in a previous blog post. More recently we have created the step-by-step guide below on changing your thread cutter knife, which is well worth a look.
